For this painting I first laid out a rough pencil figure composition sketch. I particularly liked the idea of the newsstand and the subway exit as the backdrop. The west side of Broadway in the shade enabled the light newsstand and the figures to project more strongly. I drew an inch grid on my sketch and a grid to scale on my 38 x 62" stretched canvas for the placement of the figures from the sketch to the larger canvas. Then I had each model come to my studio and pose individually. My good friend Greeny's looks and speech reminded me of Ernest Hemingway. He exposed his art students to great literature. In addition to Rembrandt and Hokusai, he brought Shakespeare and Tolstoy into his classes. Greeny was caring, understanding and compassionate and the students loved him. Not only was he a positive force in their lives, but for some who came from broken homes, he was practically a surrogate father. Even when he posed, he did so with passion making it easier for artists to capture that quality in him. Greeny was a down-to-earth guy who worked as a longshoreman before he became a teacher. When he posed for me he had the robust look of a longshoreman. He died in 2009. Hundreds of his students grieved at his passing. Elliot Godoff was a friend of my parents, and like my mother was also a pharmacist working in the Israel Zion now called Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn. He was a beautiful caring person, devoted to improving the lives of his fellow workers by organizing them into trade unions in New York City and around the country. He went on to help organize the powerful Hospital Workers Union, Local 1199. In 1972 he died and the world lost a human being who cared more about the welfare of his fellow workers than about advancing his own personal ambitions. He was an important influence in my life, so I wanted to honor him by creating a painting about his work as a union leader. I used an old photograph to capture his image and had friends pose to simulate the look of a union meeting. The union bought the painting. His work has been included in important museum and gallery shows. I had decided to use my studio's natural sky light directly on the models again, as I did in my Torture Abu-Ghraib painting. I based this composition on my observation of people waiting for New York City buses. Of course each model brings his or her own personality into the mix. The image of the Crucifixion is the most penetrating symbol of torture and cruelty. After I saw photographs taken by American soldiers at the Abu-Ghraib prison in Iraq of torture and humiliation, I felt anger and shame that my government ordered and condoned these bestial acts. The hypocrisy of our leaders who repeatedly claimed to be deeply religious and followers of Jesus Christ was astounding. Inspired by the Crucifixion paintings of Caravaggio and other Old Masters I proceeded to develop my painting. I hired models, bought costumes and props, and worked on my painting from life and at certain later stages from photographs. The lunging dog was the only thing I actually copied from the Abu-Ghraib photos. One of the beautiful qualities of New York is that you can always see different people and diverse personalities crossing paths. As with most of my paintings from photo references there are changes and adjustments made. In this painting I rearranged the central figures on the left side of the painting because I wanted them to cross paths at the same time which they did not do in the photograph. I also expanded the shade in the right section of the sidewalk. I wanted to bring attention to the horror of war, and in this case the war in Iraq. I thought of a mother losing her son and the Pieta paintings of the Old Masters and of Michelangelo's sculpture, Pieta, showing the Madonna mourning the death of her son. In my painting I sought to symbolically connect, and contrast, the image of a real mother screaming in anguish over the death of her soldier son with the Old Master images of the Madonna mourning the death of her son in a rather unreal, quiet and serene way. The torn fatigues, the mangled soldier's body and the flag symbolize one of the many young Americans who have been killed in this war. I tried to paint the mother as a woman of forty and yet appear similar in looks, including the shawl, to the classic Madonna of Michelangelo's Pieta. The barren burning oil field wasteland compositionally and symbolically strengthens the concept of blood for oil. Above the black smoke of the burning oil field is an actual gold sky, again to make the connection to the religious paintings of the early Renaissance. For this painting I hired a wonderful photographer, Michel Legrou, to do a photo shooting with models posing in various positions and expressions. I used photography because a model posing could not hold the intensity of this expression. About 100 photos were taken and I selected three to work from that had the facial expression and pose I wanted. I referred to scrap reference for certain details such as the dead soldier's facial expression and wounded soldiers in battle. The differences and individuality of people marching for peace is quite different than the mechanical sameness of soldiers marching. I took many photographs at a Peace March protesting the war in Iraq and selected ten of them that were good for expression and composition to use as reference. Attention was paid to the variation of individuals and the expression of determination. Based on these photographs, I made a compositional sketch for the grouping of figures, perspective and darks and lights. Then, with the aid of a grid, I transferred the drawings to the large canvas to scale. And then I proceeded to paint, in my usual direct alla prima style. The man holding the New York Times was not holding it, so I painted it in his hand to give him that New York West Side intellectual look. I wanted the reality of street ball. The action of the figure jumping in the air would have been impossible without the help of the camera. I changed the background from a Central Park scene to a graffitied wall and a schoolyard fence to express the trapped feeling in the inner city. Nevertheless there was a moment of joy for these young men in their game of basketball. I witnessed the reality of America as a nation of immigrants, which reminded me of the words of Emma Lazarus at the base of the Statue of Liberty: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. In addition to the human factor, compositional decisions are made. The central figure, the fruit vendor, is distinguished from the secondary characters. He is alone while they are grouped. He is also contrasted against the green wall of the newsstand. I first saw these guys at the West 4th Street basketball court and it looked like an interesting composition. Upon closer examination, after seeing the photos, I noticed that one guy had on only a T-shirt, while another was wearing a winter jacket with a fur hood. I would never have imagined this irrational bit of reality.
