Bocce Players, 1957. Oil on canvas, 37 x 41 inches.

For several years I did commercial art for a company on 110th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan. In a park across the street, older Italian men played bocce and I sketched them during my lunch breaks. When I did this painting I was very influenced by Pieter Bruegel, the sixteenth century Flemish Master.
